Week 6 - Show Heart
I want to start off by apologizing for the corny romantic description you are about to read...
With this week being about "showing heart" I figured I would consider this the unofficial Valentines Day challenge. When I first started brainstorming on ideas, I knew I wanted to try something that I read about years ago. I remember reading articles and watching Youtube videos about "Creative Photography Ideas" and there was always some version of cutting some kind of random-shaped hole into a piece of paper and putting it over the camera lens. This causes the out of focus "Bokeh" to take on the same shape as the hole cut in the paper.
The obvious shape here being a heart, I went ahead and traced my lens out very roughly onto a piece of paper and grabbed the only scissors I saw (my 3 year old son's safety scissors)…after trying to cut this shape for about 2 minutes and getting frustrated at how crappy the scissors were, I grabbed the knife I use for breaking down boxes and finished the job.
Once I had that done, it occurred to me...I cant just have a picture of out of focus lights. I was so excited about the concept that I hadn’t thought of a main subject or concept for the rest of the photo.
This caused me to sit and think, how can I incorporate the blurry hearts into a photo...then it hit me!
I wanted to have a vessel that the hearts were going into, in a way...filling that container with love. What better message for Valentine's Day!
My wife is my entire reason for getting up in the morning. She is the light in the darkness, she is the oasis in the desert. For this photo, the obvious message is that I am pouring my love for her into the bag.
It is a simple but very corny message.
This post and photo is actually going to go up before Valentines Day actually arrives so...if you are reading this sweetie, Happy Early Valentines Day!
I had a lot of fun with this challenge, I think I actually let out a little sound of glee when I reviewed the very first test shot and the little fairy lights were actually heart shaped.
